Zara is beloved in the bellydance community for her dynamic and empowering teaching style and her incredibly entertaining shows mixing authentic emotion with fun and spectacle – and also for sharing unique insights into the Egyptian dance scene through her “Zameena” online magazine, and her wildly popular online Zoom haflas.
This weekend will be a unique opportunity to study with Zara in depth, to experience the essence of Egyptian dance with authentic music and styling straight from the streets and stages of Cairo.
Saturday, June 10
11am-1pm: Egyptian Technique and Fundamentals - In this workshop Zara strips bellydance back down to the basics and looks at the core moves. Reconnect with your dance and take a fresh look at what is underling everything. Your foundation can never be too strong!
2pm-4pm: Mahraganat/Shaabi – Zara’s signature fun & dynamic Egyptian street style: Come and learn this fresh new style of dance that now dominates the Cairo scene. Zara will take you on a journey of not just learning mahragnat but of understanding it. Get with the times and get moving, with all the newest moves and techniques, straight from the streets and stages of Egypt! Zara is waiting for you!
11am-1pm: Classic Raqs Sharqi- Dancing to Abdel Halim Hafez: Come and learn about the Egyptian Heartthrob of the 60s and 70s: Abdel Halim Hafez-
We will look at who he was, what songs he is famous for and lots more. We will also be translating, UNDERSTANDING and dancing to his famous song SAWAH
2pm-4pm: Saidi/Raqs al-assaya: In this workshop you will be learning strong traditional foot and stick work of Saidi that comes from the traditional male dance. As well as more fun, cheeky, feminine accents and styling as well as context and execution.
